Phenotypic Characterization and Distribution of Sensi-1 Agrinak Chicken

Abstract

The use of local chicken genetic resources in Indonesia has considerably increased since the industry recovered from the outbreak of Avian Influenza. In the year of 2017, the Indonesian Research Institute for Animal Production (IRIAP) released SenSi-1 Agrinak chicken breed to be used as commercial meat type of local chicken in Indonesia. The paper describes how the SenSi-1 Agrinak breed was developed and efforts to disseminate the breed to the users. SenSi-1 Agrinak chicken was selected from the parent of Sentul breed from Ciamis district of West Java province. The Sentul male parent was selected for body live weight for the average 1 kg/bird at 10 weeks of age, combined with grey (G) and black spotted white (BSW) plumage color and pea-comb type. After six generations of selection, the name SenSi-1 Agrinak was given as an improved local meat-type chicken breed. By licensing system to private local chicken breeders, the SenSi-1 Agrinak has been produced and distributed to the farmer local chicken meat producers. Whilst collaboration with seven Agricultural Institute Assessment for Agricultural Technologies (AIATs) is pursuit by running the strata program to increase population and distribution throughout Indonesia.
